The Swiss Academy for Development (SAD) and the Centre for Social Research (ceres) of the University for Applied Sciences, Department of Social Work, conduct a review study on migrants from Turkey living in Switzerland. With over 74’000 people, migrants from Turkey constitute the sixth largest group of resident foreigners in Switzerland.

This study has been commissioned by the Swiss Federal Office for Migration. It shall provide an overview of the diverse lifestyles, cultures, religions, languages and forms of organization of migrants from Turkey. We aim to present the different backgrounds and stories of migrants from Turkey to create a basis for more sophisticated integration and migration policies. We also aim to facilitate and strengthen the personal contacts with this group in our daily lives.

Objectives

  • To point out the current challenges with integration processes (understood as possibilities for participation and equal opportunities) by migrants from Turkey living in Switzerland.
  • To describe the spectrum of personal daily experiences by the migrants and to give a statistical overview of the situation of the migrants living in Switzerland.
  • To present potential options as well as recommendations for practitioners in the social and educational field, in the health care sector or in the domain of migration and integration policies.

Implementation

To obtain a broad overview of the situation of migrants living in Switzerland, the study is based on a literature review and on an analysis of statistical data provided by the Federal Office for Migration and the Federal Office for Statistics. Twenty-five interviews with experts such as key persons, practitioners and scholars will provide additional, in depth information on the situation of this specific group of migrants.

The study will result in a comprehensive publication which can be read by chapter or by topic. The publication will contain the following subjects: the current social, political and economic situation in Turkey; the history of migration movements from Turkey to Switzerland; socio-demographical and socio-economic aspects of the situation of the migrants in Switzerland; cultural, religious, social and political forms of organization; transnational relations and activities of the migrants; and options and recommendations for context-sensitive future action. The study on the Sri Lankan diaspora published by the Federal Office for Migration serves as an example for this study.

Target group

The publication is intended primarily for professionals such as teachers, social workers, personnel in the health care sector etc., who provide services to migrants or work directly with migrants.
