SAD and the South African organisation SCORE are partnering in a project, using sport as a tool to achieve youth empowerment and social transformation. While SCORE implements the project activities in nine disadvantaged South African and Namibian communities, SAD is responsible for assessing and evaluating its impact.
Southern Africa faces a number of challenges, HIV and AIDS and gender inequity being amongst the most prevalent. Left in single-parent or parentless homes due to the epidemic, many young people become increasingly vulnerable. Risks for young women are exacerbated by the often prevailing lack of equity and awareness of gender issues in the communities.
The ‘Cup of Heroes’ project addresses these problems by actively engaging young people in becoming a part of the solution. The project uses sport as an innovative way to provide youth with skills and opportunities to transcend their current circumstances and positively contribute to their communities.
Programme objectives
- To increase sports participation, leadership and organisation capacity in target communities
- To increase awareness and understanding of key health and social issues (including HIV and AIDS, cultural diversity and gender equity)
- Develop a Monitoring and Evaluation system to scientifically assess the project’s effectiveness
Project structure and activities
SCORE is responsible for the implementation of the activities in three Namibian and six South African communities. SCORE delivers sports, leadership and life skills trainings to young peer leaders and organises regional, national and international “Cup of Heroes” tournaments.
SAD establishes a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) system to assess the projects’ effectiveness. The M&E system is developed in a participatory way in close collaboration with SCORE. In addition to providing training and M&E workshops to SCORE staff, SAD collects and analyses data using both quantitative and qualitative methods.
