Playful Teaching Manual

A handbook in English and Nepali

“Move 4 New Horizons” is an educational programme for disadvantaged out-of-school children in the Dang district in the Mid-Western region of Nepal. As a main project activity, 15 non formal education (NFE)-classes are held in different villages. The NFE classes target children aged 5–10 years who do not have access to primary school education due to discrimination on the basis of gender, caste, ethnicity, disability, poverty and/or conflict.
This manual was developed to help the facilitators in their NFE class-teaching and to complement the trainings that they have received.

School drop out and repetition rates are the highest in the first two years at primary school level in Nepal and children from marginalised backgrounds are those that are most at risk of dropping out early.
What can a teacher do to make sure that disadvantaged children are not left behind and drop out early? How can the learning environment be adapted to become more responsive to the specific learning needs of these children?
The challenge for a teacher is to provide disadvantaged children with achievable and fun learning opportunities and thereby help them to develop self-confidence, trust in their teacher and a more positive attitude towards learning.

By systematically integrating playful teaching activities, the Move 4 New Horizons project has achieved remarkable successes. By sharing the manual with a wider audience, we hope that it will serve as a reference on playful and inclusive teaching approaches, which can be applied in pre-school and primary schools, and in either non-formal or formal teaching settings.
