The Swiss Federal Institute of Sport Magglingen (SFISM) and SAD develop a practical manual which supports sport clubs who want to use sport’s potential for improving integration of those from migrant backgrounds into their host society. The manual addressing the issues “diversity management” and “intercultural dialogue” in the domain of sport in Switzerland will be compiled and evaluated in close collaboration with sport actors and immigrants. The practical manual will be published in German and in French and shall build the basis for further education and awareness workshops in and with sport clubs.

Sport associations and sport clubs have the potential for improving integration of those from migrant backgrounds, because they offer leisure time activities that actively engage those of all ages. The language of sport is also understood by all. Regular physical activity has a positive effect on social cohesion, as well as on the learning process of the local language, educational success, self-confidence and health.

Although in general, organised sport activities are open to all, immigrant participants are underrepresented. On the other hand, experience shows that poorly managed integration in sports clubs with high levels of cultural diversity can trigger conflicts. Therefore, the active participation and involvement of immigrants in organised sport may be regarded as challenge but at the same time also to have great potential for the sport club as well as for society.

In order to facilitate the process of integration for people of immigrant background into Swiss society, different programmes and instruments already exist. The process of integration relies heavily on the will and competencies of Swiss institutions, organisations and persons. The planned manual aims to encourage sport clubs to be receptive to intercultural exchange and support diversity management within the sport clubs.

Aims

  • Enhancement of participation and involvement of immigrants into organised sport activities.
  • Sensitisation of the associations and concerned sport clubs on the opportunities and challenges within cultural diversity and their social role concerning the integration of people from different backgrounds.

  • To provide leaders of sport associations with tips and recommendations on how to improve cultural diversity in everyday life and for their own benefits.
