Wanted: Effective Support for ‘AIDS Orphans’ in Africa
![]() Children and youth in Southern Africa are particularly affected by AIDS. According to UN estimates, 14 million children have lost their parents to AIDS in recent years. There are numerous programmes that aim to improve the living conditions of ‘AIDS orphans’; but only rarely has their effectiveness been studied scientifically. A three-year study by the Swiss Academy for Develoment (SAD) has revealed that support programmes must also target children with chronically ill caregivers. They struggle with social problemsthat are comparable to those of “AIDS orphans”. Further, it was found that AIDS myths are still widespread despite big prevention campaigns. |
