Nepalese children belonging to the caste of the Dalit (the so called “untouchables”) are often disadvantaged when it comes to access to, and remaining in, public schools. The Nepalese Dalit Welfare Organization (DWO) and SAD are running a project to alleviate the situation. A documentary film by DWO details the project and illustrates its background. Since 2008, SAD and the Nepalese grassroots organisation DWO have been implementing the educational programme “Move 4 New Horizons” for disadvantaged out of school children in the Mid-Western region of the country. Most of these children belong to the caste of the Dalit or to some other discriminated ethnic group. By teaching them basic reading, writing, and mathematic skills in a non-formal way and by offering them well-guided sport and play activities, the project is taking on a holistic approach to education. The aim is not only to facilitate children's access to public schools, but also to support these children, who have experienced discrimination and conflict in the past and in their psychosocial development. So far about 600 children have entered public school and successfully continued classes. Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 |
